Cleve's Auction Night- Football Hits

In the mad rush that is the holiday season, I neglected to post about the wins I, well, won at Cleve's auction the week before getting blanked at the Christmas auction.  This group was almost all football, and every card was some sort of relic/auto.

The only baseball card I took home was this Richie Ashburn stadium relic card:

I also picked up two lots of football cards.  The first was all relics:

 The scan doesn't read well, but this is a jersey/pants combo relic.

 Nice trio of cards of potential HOFers. 

These are both "event" worn jerseys, which are totally pointless.

I also picked up a lot of autographed cards of people I've mostly never heard of:

I bid on this lot almost solely to get this Tavaris Jackson card.  Tavaris was briefly a Razorback before getting tired of sitting on the bench and transferring.  This is a really sharp card in hand.

The lot came with 13 other autos.  I don't care about any of them and they are up for trade.  I guess I'll save a few for my little boy who sometimes acts like he is interested in football cards.  If no one, including him, is interested, they'll make good Listia fodder.

Grades:

Richie Ashburn Stadium Relic  $3:  B  Not really a fit for any of my collecting goals, but a good cheap addition to my relic binder.

Lot of FB Relics:  $4:  A:  6 Total relics, all of well known players.  Less than a buck a peice.

Lot of FB Autos:  $6:  A-  Happy about the Jackson auto, and the others should help build my points on Listia.

Cleve’s Auction Night: No One Goes To Cleve’s Anymore, It’s Too Crowded

Ok, so I borrowed that head scratcher from Yogi Berra (he once said the same thing about a popular restaurant.)  

The point is that Cleve’s auctions have been packed lately.   I didn’t get a whole lot of what I wanted at the most recent auction, so I had to take a different, “moneyball” type strategy.  My approach was that since most of the stuff I wanted went for more than I wanted to pay,  I would simply buy other stuff that was going cheap even though it might not fit my collection.  Then I could flip that stuff on eBay or trade for what I wanted.

Here is what I got from the last auction, some of it I’m keeping, some of it I’m selling and some is for trade:

This Mickey Mantle Pin was my win of the night.  I got it for $7 and will flip it for triple that on eBay.

I also picked up these two Yankee autos at good prices.  The Noesi has already been shipped off to someone, but the other is available if anyone is interested.

There were a lot of factory sets available at this auction.  Most of it went for more than I wanted to pay, but I managed a 1992 Factory Score set for $3.  Don’t tell me I overpaid, smart asses.  It’s a good deal, Score or no Score.

Football cards aren’t a big deal to me, but I couldn’t resist these vintage cards.  An Earl Campbell rookie for $3 is an easy call, and a Gayle Sayers for $2 was as well.  Both are available for trade.

I’m not sure what I want to do with this Vincent Jackson patch card.   The patch is pretty cool, but I doubt I can flip it for much.  It’s available for trade too.

Finally, I picked up this Ray Knight relic card.  This may actually turn out to be the “get” of the night for me.  Cleve mentioned that it was hard to find, but I just bought it because I could get it for $3 and Knight was one of my favorite Mets growing up.    I can’t decide what I’m going to do with it yet.  I might trade it for the right offer.

Mantle Topps WS Pin $7 A+:  I should probably keep it, but I can sell it for a nice profit online

Hector Noesi Auto $4 B:  And

Nunez Auto $6  B:  These are good trade bait.

1992 Score Factory Set $3  A:  It’s junk wax, but it’s sealed and has some cool extras.

Earl Campbell Rookie $3  A: and

Gayle Sayers                   $2   A:  Nice vintage cards of HOF running backs

Vincent Jackson Patch $6   C:  It’s a nifty patch, but I’m not sure I’m going to get much for it.  I’ve got a little nephew that likes the Chargers, so I’ll just give it to him.

Ray Knight Relic $3  A+:  I think this is a tough card to get, and Knight doesn’t have my relic cards.

Card Shop Auction Night Part 2:

When I got out to my car after the auction and got a chance to see what all I got, this was the first card I pulled out of the first box:

I had no idea there was a card of Bob Saget out there.  Not that I was looking for it, but I was really puzzled to see this.   Of course I was initially familiar with him from Full House with the Olsen twin lizards.   But, a few years ago I was flipping around the tube and paused when I saw him doing a standup comedy routine.  It was one of the foulest things I’ve ever heard.  It was really hard to reconcile that against the character he played on TV.    Not that I watched Full House, but I know enough to know it was a family show.  Once I got over my confusion with his filthy act, I will admit he was really funny.  He’s also been on Entourage quite a bit, and his plays a complete perv very convincingly.

I need to do something fun with this card, but I don’t know what yet. 

I took a second look through the boxes tonight and I am more and more pleased with my purchase.  There weren't any monster cards, but enough decent material for my own collection as well as trades to make it worth the effort.  I mentioned yesterday that I got some basketball cards in my goody boxes from the auction:

There was large chunk of this SP set.  About 80 cards with some dupes, but not many big names.  If anyone is working on this set, I might be able to help you out.

There was a handful of Chris Paul and Vince Carter cards as too.  These will work nicely in my little side basketball collection, unless anyone out there is interested in them. I didn't scan them, but there were several other mid-range stars (Jamal Mashburn, Shawn Kemp, Glenn Robinson, Eddie Jones, and Tracy McGrady) included.

Yesterday, I showed the Mike Piazza and Frank Thomas cards that came in the boxes.  There also were nice lots of Jeff Bagwell and Alfonso Soriano.

I think my best hits were these low numbered Playoff contender cards.  I didn’t even notice them until my 2^nd look through the box.  Again, there aren’t any big names here, but I’m always happy to have some low numbered cards fall into my lap, although the coloring on the corners on some of these looks a little jacked up.

I included a card from 2006 Bowman Chrome in the scan too.  The box had about 40 of the first 55 cards of this set.  I thought maybe the set only went to around 60 based on this, but apparently it’s a pretty big set.  So I won’t be chasing it. 

There were countless other little single nuggets in the boxes, but I’m going to pass on spending too much time on them.  I’m sure I’ll go through the boxes yet again tomorrow and if there is something that looks interesting, I’ll make a note of it.  Again, if anyone is interested in these, let me know!

Finally, there was a box of old Beckett’s that was about to go up for bid, but Cleve decided to just give them away to anyone who wanted them so I snagged a few.  For me, the price index is useless, but I am interested in the articles.  Just like Playboy.
